TURBO OR SUPER CHARGER?

FORCED INDUCTION SYSTEM

So, what is forced induction system?

Forced induction is a of delivering compressed air from the intake to an internal combustion engine. This system increase the density, pressure and temperature of  the air.More air means more oxygen for combustion hence create more boom and power.

For rookies, there are three type of forced induction system commonly used by cars. Its either driven by a turbocharger, supercharger or both turbo + supercharger.

These forced induction systems is very popular among car enthusiast as it provide the boost that increase the engine horsepower.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Basically both drives the same function the only difference is that how this component is powered.

TURBOS

 turbo diagram

A turbo commonly have two turbine and divided into two parts, the hot side and the cold side. As the exhaust gas is released from the engine, it will flow trough a turbine  (hot side) before entering the exhaust. This would spool up the turbine to suck in air at the cold side of the turbo. The air would also be compressed inside the turbo creating denser air flowing trough the inter cooler then the engine for combustion.Disadvantages of the turbo is that it needs time to spool up and create the boost wanted. This is known as turbo lag.

SUPERCHARGER

Meanwhile a supercharger does the same function as a turbo. The only difference is that it is mechanically driven by a belt which is connected to the engine crankshaft. The boost provided by the supercharger depends on the rotation of the engine crankshaft.A supercharger had no lag like a turbo does which means the boost could be felt every time the driver hits the gas pedal.Disadvantages of a supercharger is that it is bigger and require more space to be fitted in the engine bay.A supercharger also does not create as much boost as a turbo does but is more ergonomic for consumer and easier to maintain.
