Overview

Elegantly styled inside and out, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-class lineup pampers its occupants in the best Mercedes-Benz tradition and makes long-distance drives feel like jaunts across town. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard and provides adequate power, but the available twin-turbo V-6 is a silken, authoritative engine that we'd recommend wholeheartedly. Enthusiast drivers may find the standard E-class's driving dynamics disappointing—it's clearly tuned for comfort—but those seeking a pillow-soft ride should look no further. Technology takes center stage inside the E-class's sumptuous cabin in the form of a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display and an optional semi-autonomous driving mode. Its purity of mission has earned it a spot on our 10Best Cars list for 2019.

What's New for 2019?

Last year's E400 sedan, coupe, and convertible are replaced by the E450, which is powered by a more powerful V-6 engine with 33 extra horsepower. Other changes are more minor: a new three-spoke steering wheel joins the standard features list, two new trim options dress up the cabin, a new 19-inch wheel design is available, and the Rear Safety Package—rear side-impact airbags and rear-seat seatbelt airbags—is now an option.

  • E450 cabriolet: $68,295
Choosing the new E450 4Matic sedan—and its twin-turbo V-6—over the four-cylinder E300 requires an upcharge, but it's well worth it for the extra power from the seriously smooth six. We'd spec the Luxury Styling package which brings an adjustable suspension, 18-inch wheels, a vinyl-covered dashboard with stitching, and package-specific styling (a hood ornament, three-bar chrome grille, and unique front bumper). We'd also suggest the adjustable air suspension.
Likes: Long distances feel like mere jaunts, plush ride, effortlessly powerful V-6.
Dislikes: Prioritizes comfort over driving enjoyment, four-cylinder engine sounds coarse under heavy throttle, abrupt shifts in Sport+ driving mode.
Mercedes-Benz offers the 2019 E-class in two potencies—the E300 sedan is motivated by a turbo four-cylinder while E450 models come with a twin-turbo V-6. The V-6 is the one to get; it's smooth, quiet, powerful, and rocketed an E450 4Matic sedan from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. For comparison, the turbocharged four-cylinder E300 required 6.5 seconds. We haven't tested the E450 coupe or convertible yet, but in our testing, the 2018 E400 coupe reached 60 mph in 5.0 seconds flat while the heavier convertible did it in 5.2. With more power than the E400 models, the E450 cars should shave a few tenths of a second off these times.
The E-class is a comfort-biased car; the handling is competent but not sporty. It leans in corners, but it rarely feels overwhelmed when pushed hard. With the air suspension in its Comfort setting, the ride is creamy, and the E-class is perfect for gobbling up lots of road. It glides over pavement imperfections with only slight notification of such unpleasantries communicated to the cabin. With the drive-mode selector set to either Comfort or Eco, the steering is nicely weighted—not too light, not too heavy—and feels accurate. The E-class tracks straight on the freeway with a solid and predictable nature, and feedback from the road is muted.
