MANAGEMENT FUNCTION - PLANNING

PLANNING-Planning means looking ahead and chalking up potential action directions to follow. It is a step in preparation. It's a systemic process that decides where, how and who will be doing a specific job. Planning is a comprehensive plan for future action paths.

"The strategy is half done" is rightly said. Planning therefore takes into account the organization's available & prospective human and physical resources in order to achieve effective coordination, contribution & perfect adaptation. It is the basic management function which includes the formulation of one or more detailed plans to achieve an optimum balance of needs or demands with the resources available

"Planning is a mental predisposition to do things in an orderly manner, to deliberate before acting and to act in the light of evidence rather than guessing," according to Urwick. Planning is, among others, agreeing on the best alternative to perform various administrative roles to achieve predetermined objectives.

"Planning is determining in advance what to do, how to do and who is to do it," Koontz & O'Donell said. Planning fills the distance between where we're, where we're going to. It makes something possible that would not otherwise happen.

The basic idea of planning is simply the process of thinking about the actions needed to achieve a desired goal. This means determining what to do by making rationally tested presumptions about the future, and how to do it.

-Creation of goals
Planning involves the process of creating realistic goals to be achieved.

-Planning provides direction
Direction is the process of giving instructions as to what to do to achieve the desired results in the most efficient manner possible.

-Planning facilitates decision making
Planning acts as a guide to make efficient and accurate decisions.

-Planning Promotes Innovative Ideas
Today's world and markets are growing dynamic every day, in order to exceed competition, ideas are needed to manage the enterprise's functions from the box. Not necessarily, the organization needs to discover a new product rather than just the concept of handling operations differently which results in a lot of cost savings / efficiencies.

Planning is a complicated process with multiple constraints due in particular to its futuristic nature. But its value is that an undertaking can not be overstated. In some terms it is better to prepare for the uncertain future than not to prepare at all.
